1. Update Your Firmware Immediately
Before doing anything else, connect to Wi-Fi and check for system updates. Meta pushes significant improvements and new features through firmware updates, and the out-of-box version is almost certainly outdated. Go to Settings, then System, then Software Update.
2. Set Up Your Play Space Properly
Take time to draw a generous guardian boundary. The Quest 3's improved passthrough makes boundary setup faster, but don't rush it. A larger play space means fewer boundary warnings interrupting your games. If you have a dedicated VR room, consider disabling the boundary for a fully immersive experience.
3. Download Beat Saber First
Every Quest 3 owner should start with Beat Saber. It's the perfect introduction to VR — intuitive, physically engaging, and impossible not to enjoy. It also serves as a great demo when showing VR to friends and family.
4. Enable 120Hz Mode
The Quest 3 supports 120Hz refresh rate, but it's not always enabled by default for all apps. Go to Settings, then System, then Display, and make sure the higher refresh rate is available. The difference in smoothness is noticeable and reduces motion sickness for sensitive users.
5. Try Mixed Reality
The Quest 3's killer feature is its color passthrough. Download a mixed reality game or app to see your actual room blended with virtual content. First Encounters (free) is a great starting point — aliens invade your living room.
6. Set Up Hand Tracking
Put your controllers down and try the Quest 3's hand tracking. It's gotten remarkably good and works for navigating menus, browsing the web, and playing certain games without controllers. Enable it in Settings under Movement Tracking.
7. Install a Comfort Mod
The stock head strap works fine for short sessions, but for longer play you'll want an upgrade. A third-party halo strap or elite-style strap dramatically improves comfort and weight distribution. This is the single best accessory investment you can make.
